MSN News: Small World

MSN news payed a visit to the Smallville set while they were filming A episode. there they had the oportunity to talk with actor Justin Hartley and Tom Welling

Welcome to Season 6 of the hit CW series "Smallville" and the bachelor pad of Oliver Queen, played by the boyishly dashing Justin Hartley ("Passions"). Oliver is the latest DC Comics character to visit Smallville and the young Clark Kent, future Superman, played by Tom Welling. Like Clark, Oliver has a secret: By night he darts into a secret compartment of his penthouse and suits up to become the Green Arrow, who, like Robin Hood, robs from the rich to give to the poor.

In the scene being filmed today (part of the sixth episode, "Reunion"), Oliver is giving a disbelieving Clark some nasty background about the Luthor family -- part of the reason Oliver has come to Smallville -- to persuade Clark to join forces to fight evil, forming the embryonic stage of the Justice League.

"I thought it was an act of kindness," Oliver says, relating a story about Lionel Luthor's sparing no expense to save the life of a schoolmate mortally wounded by his son, Lex. "Now that I'm older, I realize it was just an act. Lionel was trying to cover up what had happened between Duncan and Lex. Keep the stink off the Luthor name." As the story sinks in, Clark begins to realize the breadth of the evil of the Luthors -- including his onetime friend, Lex -- and he sees that he will need to step in as the past has come back to haunt Smallville.

Naturally, all of this leaves Clark somewhat tortured, which, of course, is part of the deep appeal of the series.

Life After High School

The premise of the series is brilliant: Focus on the young Clark Kent, wrestling with his powers, keeping an agonizing secret, even as he tries to fit in at high school -- where everyone is struggling.

In Season 6, Clark is a young man who has graduated high school and is beginning to take shape as the adult he will be, but the turmoil remains.

Unlike other series that sparkled while their characters were in high school, only to peter out after graduation day ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Beverly Hills 90210," "Gilmore Girls"), Welling believes "Smallville's" focus has allowed it to grow along with its young cast members.

"The show rarely focused on the actual academic school year," Welling says during a break between takes, in an interview conducted, fittingly, in the nearby set of the newsroom of The Daily Planet. "It's been about the human drama ... about trying to be normal. I think a lot of people can relate to that. There is no normal."

Welling says he's excited about this season's development of the Justice League and Clark's coming more to terms with his destiny. And he's looking forward to his second stint at directing (his debut aired in April 2006) episode 16 of the new season.

"It's wonderfully fulfilling," Welling says of directing. "I really enjoy it; I learned a lot more about the cast and crew." After being on the set for nearly five years, he says, "I met a lot of people here I never knew before."

Season 6 will also signal subtly that Clark is leaving boyhood behind: less plaid. His plaid jacket will rarely be seen as Clark's focus moves away from the family farm. But the royal blue and red T-shirts, which showcase Welling's fighting-trim form, remain. So how many royal-blue T-shirts does Welling reckon he's worn over the course of the show? The star lets out a hoot of laughter.

"Thousands, as opposed to hundreds, really," he says. He tells of going to the T-shirt wardrobe trailer, having spilled something on a shirt and needing a new one, and watching the wardrobe coordinator scrutinize "racks and racks" of seemingly identical blue shirts, finally selecting "this one perfect one."

So at least some choices Clark will face won't be agonizing.

Alfred Gough on Smallville

Alfred Gough talks what to expect about this upcoming season, about the highly anticipated arrival of Oliver Queen and about the most likely 7th season and the life of Smallville after that.

It doesn't look as if things are going to get any easier this year for young Clark Kent.

During the fifth season of TV's "Smallville, " Clark's adoptive dad, Jonathan, died. Clark also lost the love of his life, Lana Lang (Kristen Kreuk), pushing her away after deciding he could never tell her the truth about his alien origins and amazing powers. And his friendship with Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum) fractured completely, with Lex and Lana becoming a couple.

Season six, beginning Sept. 28 on The CW, will follow "the lonely road of a hero, basically, " says Alfred Gough, an executive producer who along with Miles Millar created the show about the Superman-to-be. "It's all going to come to bear on him this year."

First, though, Clark (Tom Welling) needs to bust out of the Phantom Zone, where he was imprisoned in the final moments of last season. The season opener will show what it's like inside the Phantom Zone, an other-dimensional prison for Kryptonian criminals created by Clark's biological father, Jor-El.

Clark will escape, of course, but he won't be the only one, Gough says. "Over the course of the season, they discover there are others who have gotten out that obviously have a bone to pick with Clark, since his father's the one who put them there."

At least Clark gets a new ally this season: Oliver Queen, aka Green Arrow. The character, played by Justin Hartley, will appear in seven episodes, Gough says, and develop a relationship with Lois Lane (Erica Durance).

"What's interesting about him is, like Batman, he has no superpowers. Obviously, he's an incredible archer, but it's all done sort of with gadgets and his own sort of wit."

Oliver soon discovers that Clark isn't exactly your average farm boy - which fits perfectly into Oliver's plans.

"You discover what he's really trying to do is find like-minded people with powers and sort of start a nascent Justice League, " Gough says.

Look for heroes from past seasons, including Aquaman, Flash and Cyborg, to show up as well.

Another figure from Superman mythology appears in the season opener. Aaron Ashmore plays aspiring Daily Planet photographer Jimmy Olsen, a recurring character who will provide a love interest for Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack).

"You have Lois with Oliver and Lana with Lex and Chloe with Jimmy, so Clark is definitely the odd man out, " Gough says.

Meanwhile, the gloves are off between Clark and Lex. "Clark's eyes are kind of opened to him. The days when he would give him the benefit of a doubt are gone."

Last year, "Smallville" moved from Wednesdays to Thursdays. Despite competition from such heavy-hitters as CBS' "Survivor, " the ratings for "Smallville" rose.

"We were more than surprised, " Gough says. "We were shocked and relieved."

This season, "Smallville" is on the same night but on a new network, The CW, which offers a mix of programs from the now-defunct WB and UPN. Gough says he was always confident "Smallville" would survive the transition to the new network.

When "Smallville" debuted on The WB in 2001, Clark was in high school and had a budding friendship with Lex. Now that Clark's in college and he and Lex have become the enemies they were destined to become, how much longer can the show go on?

"This year and, God willing, next, and then I think that's probably ultimately when we call it a day, " Gough says.

He's not saying season seven would be the end for sure.

"We never say never, " Gough says. But every story has an ending, he says, "this one in particular, and we certainly don't want to outlast our welcome."

Justice League episode!!!

Alfred Gough executive producer of Smallville, told TV Guide's Mike Ausiello

"Episode 11, which is our second episode back in January, is going to be called "Justice," and it'll basically be our first look at the Justice League. We're gonna have Green Arrow, Cyborg, Flash and Aquaman, played by Alan Rickman, who is coming back. That's gonna be our first Justice League episode." And where exactly is Wonder Woman? "Ask Joel Silver," Gough grumbles. "He's the producer; he controls the movie rights. We'd do a whole Wonder Woman series if we had Wonder Woman, but Joss Whedon is writing the movie, so we can't have her." Damn, damn, damn!

Alfred Gough executive producer of Smallville, told The Continuum that the show is going to make a big splash for its sixth season -- and first on The CW.

"We've got everything crossed we can possibly have crossed for the launch of Season 6 and the new CW network, " Gough told The Continuum. "I can honestly tell you that this will be our biggest season opener in Smallville history.

"You are going to see inside the Phantom Zone, you are going to see Zod, you are going to see Jimmy Olsen, as well as an incredible amount of action, spectacle, humor and, of course, heart."

Smallville actually makes its CW debut on Thursday with a repeat of "Vessel, " last season's finale. The sixth-season opener, "Zod, " will air on Thursday, Sept. 28.

The CW combines the old WB and UPN networks, and in some markets as large as Detroit, the series will be on a new channel.

"The show remains on Thursday at 8 p.m., and in most of the country -- 67 percent to be exact -- it will be on the same channel, " Gough said. "For everyone in markets where the network is switching, please consult the CW website for the local listing. Hopefully they've been blitzing the airwaves with the info...so please watch and tell all of your friends!"

Christopher Reeve's Final Project

"Everyone's Hero" was Christopher Reeve's directing project at the time of his death in 2004, sees its wide-release across America tomorrow (September 15th).

Reeve is listed as Director of the film along with Colin Brady and Dan St. Piere. Reeve's late wife, Dana Reeve, provided the voice of character "Emily Irving" in the film and also acted as an Executive Producer before her own untimely death. Their son, Will Reeve, contributes the voice of "Big Kid" in the movie.

The Depression-era movie centers on a baseball-loving boy named Yankee Irving who, despite his best efforts, can't hit a ball. But much like Reeve's determination to overcome the spinal injury that left him a quadriplegic, the boy refuses to give up his dream of playing in the big leagues.

"Chris's focus was to make that movie in one way or another, and we pursued that no matter what," said producer Ron Tippe. "It meant a great deal to us to deliver his vision."

Justin Hartley Interview

Recently Soap Opera Digest had an interview with Justin Hartley aka Oliver Queen about his upcoming projects and of course his role in Smallville: The charming Green Arrow.

This is part of his interview:

Digest: How is SMALLVILLE going?
Hartley: It's going well. I'm going to try not to run this show into the ground. It's a finely tuned machine because they've been doing it for so long. I go to Canada and just follow the leader.

Digest: How many episodes have you filmed?
Hartley: I'm going back tomorrow to finish my third one. They get the character heavily involved in the story right away.

Digest: Did you do a lot of research for your role as Green Arrow?
Hartley: You know me, I don't really work that hard [laughs]. Of course I did! I read a bunch of comics and books. You can watch other actors that you admire that played superheroes. I was watching Michael Keaton and Christian Bale and their takes on Batman. It's interesting because that helps me with this character more than it did for Aquaman because Green Arrow is more like a Batman character. Also, I studied Clive Owen in Inside Man. He doesn't play a superhero, but this guy is a bad guy, and the whole movie, he's acting with sunglasses on, a hood and a mask up to his nose, so all you see is his forehead. The Green Arrow costume is a little bit concealing as far as the eyes go. A lot of times when you're acting, you use your eyes. When you're covered up, you can't do that. There are some times when you actually see my face on the show, so that's good [laughs]. It's not even me. It's a lie. I just feel bad about the Aquaman thing, so I just tell everybody I'm on SMALLVILLE.
